Vijay Kate Senior Counsellor AV Global Overseas Education MBBS in Georgia guidance for Indian families

15 years of honest counselling - Vijay Kate has guided 800+ families to Georgia

A note from our Senior Counsellor

If you are a parent reading this page, I want to tell you what I tell every family that walks into our office asking about MBBS in Georgia.

Georgia is not a miracle. It is not a shortcut. And it is definitely not the right choice for every student. But for the right student — one who has cleared NEET, whose family has a realistic budget of Rs 25 to 55 Lakhs, and who is willing to work hard for six years — MBBS in Georgia can genuinely change their life.

I have sent over 800 students to Georgia since 2012. Some are now doctors in India. Some are preparing for USMLE in America. And yes, some struggled — because they chose the wrong university, or they did not prepare for FMGE from Year 1, or they went with an agent who disappeared after the visa was done.

This page exists so your child does not make those mistakes. Every number here is verified. Every warning is based on something we have seen go wrong with real families. Read it fully. Then call us — the counselling is free, and the honesty is not optional.

— Vijay Kate, Senior Counsellor and Director, AV Global Overseas Education

Georgia has emerged as one of the most scrutinised destinations for Indian MBBS aspirants - and for a measurable reason. The Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) 2024 data recorded 4,221 Indian students from Georgia appearing in a single cycle - the largest national cohort from any single abroad destination. That sample size matters: it makes Georgia's 35.65% FMGE pass rate the most statistically credible performance benchmark available, unlike destinations reporting rates based on 10 to 30 student samples.

This guide does not sell Georgia. It provides the exact regulatory, financial, and academic facts that the NMC Gazette 2021 guidelines require Indian students to verify before enrolling in any foreign medical institution. Read every section before making a decision that will shape the next decade of your child's career.

NMC Gazette 2021 Compliance: What Indian Students Must Legally Verify

The NMC Gazette 2021 guidelines - formally titled the "Screening Test Regulations 2021 and Eligibility Criteria for Indian Nationals Seeking Admission to Foreign Medical Institutions" - impose strict conditions that override any marketing claim made by any consultancy or university. Before you pay a single rupee in fees, confirm the following:

Mandatory Compliance Checklist Under NMC Gazette 2021

  1. NEET Qualification is Non-Negotiable: Any Indian student enrolling in a foreign medical institution after August 14, 2021 must have qualified NEET. There is no exemption. Universities that claim otherwise are non-compliant.
  2. University Must Be Listed in WHO World Directory of Medical Schools: Verify your chosen institution directly at wdoms.org. NMC cross-references this list for FMGE eligibility.
  3. 54-Month Course Duration Minimum: The clinical programme (excluding internship) must be a minimum 54-month course duration. Shorter programmes do not qualify for FMGE registration.
  4. 12-Month Mandatory Internship: Students must complete a 12-month mandatory internship - either in Georgia at an approved teaching hospital or, under specific NMC conditions, in India after returning. Internship completed at non-teaching hospitals does not count.
  5. English-Medium Instruction Verification: Your admission letter and university prospectus must explicitly state English-medium instruction. Programmes taught in Georgian or Russian with English "support" do not meet the criterion.
  6. ECTS Credit System Alignment: Georgian universities follow the ECTS credit system, which maps to European academic standards and is accepted for ECFMG certification, a prerequisite for USMLE preparation pathways.
  7. Annual NMC Gazette Update: Georgia's approved university list is reviewed annually. A university approved in 2024 may be delisted in 2025. Check the NMC website (nmc.org.in) for the current Gazette notification before enrolling in 2026.

Critical 2026 Alert: The Government of Georgia announced a suspension of foreign admissions at state-funded universities from the 2026 academic year. This does not affect private accredited universities currently approved by NMC. However, this is a rapidly evolving regulatory situation. Confirm the status of your specific institution before applying.

Tbilisi State Medical University (TSMU)

Founded in 1918, Tbilisi State Medical University is Georgia's oldest and most internationally recognised medical school. It is listed in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools, accredited by the National Centre for Educational Quality Enhancement of Georgia, and recognised by ECFMG - making its graduates eligible for USMLE preparation and examination. TSMU's MD programme is conducted entirely in English-medium instruction, follows the ECTS credit system, and has a total 54-month course duration of academic coursework followed by a 12-month mandatory internship. Annual tuition sits at the higher end of the Georgian market (USD 7,500 to 8,000) but comes with access to the largest teaching hospital network in Tbilisi.

Georgian National University SEU

Georgian National University SEU (SEU - Tbilisi) is a private university accredited by Georgia's National Accreditation Centre and listed in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools. Its MD programme is structured around the ECTS credit system, delivered in English-medium instruction, and spans the NMC-mandated 54-month course duration plus a 12-month mandatory internship. SEU has invested significantly in simulation laboratories and has a dedicated FMGE and NEXT Exam Step 1 and Step 2 preparation cell for Indian students. Mid-range fees (USD 5,500 to 6,500 per year) make it a strong value proposition for families balancing cost against infrastructure quality.

Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University (Medical Faculty)

Located in Batumi on Georgia's Black Sea coast, Batumi Shota Rustaveli State University offers one of the most affordable NMC-eligible MD programmes in Georgia (USD 4,000 to 4,500 per year). The medical faculty is listed in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools, operates under the ECTS credit system, and delivers coursework in English-medium instruction. The programme satisfies both the 54-month course duration and the 12-month mandatory internship requirements under the NMC Gazette 2021 guidelines. Important caveat: given the 2026 state university admission freeze for foreign students in Georgia, verify that Batumi Shota Rustaveli's medical faculty is not affected before applying, as its state-university classification requires confirmation of exemption status.

FMGE and NEXT Exam: The Licensing Reality Indian Students Must Plan For

Georgia's 35.65% FMGE pass rate in 2024 - based on a sample of 4,221 students - is the most statistically meaningful data point available for any foreign MBBS destination. For comparison: Romania's 5%, Bulgaria's 28.57%, and Serbia's 33.33% are based on cohorts of fewer than 100 students, making them statistically unreliable. Georgia's number tells you something real: approximately 1 in 3 Georgia-returned graduates clears FMGE on the first attempt without dedicated preparation, which means 2 in 3 require multiple attempts or structured coaching.

Transition from FMGE to NEXT Exam

The National Medical Commission is replacing FMGE with the NEXT Exam Step 1 and Step 2 framework. Under the proposed NEXT structure:

  • NEXT Exam Step 1 is a theory-based licensing examination testing basic science and clinical knowledge - broadly comparable to USMLE Step 1 in structure.
  • NEXT Exam Step 2 assesses clinical skills and practical competencies.
  • Foreign medical graduates will be required to clear both steps before practising in India. The transition timeline is subject to NMC notification; track updates at nmc.org.in.

Students who graduate from Georgian universities and aim to practise in India must therefore plan a dual-track preparation strategy: the ECTS credit system-aligned Georgian curriculum provides a strong foundation in systems-based learning, which overlaps significantly with the USMLE preparation question banks widely used for NEXT Step 1 coaching.

USMLE Pathway for Georgia Graduates

Graduates from Georgian universities listed in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools and certified by ECFMG are eligible to apply for USMLE preparation and examination. The ECTS credit system used by Georgian institutions is compatible with ECFMG's credit verification requirements. This makes Georgia one of the few affordable MBBS abroad destinations where both an Indian licensing track (NEXT Exam) and a US/global licensing track (USMLE) remain open upon graduation.

Realistic Total Cost of MBBS in Georgia for Indian Students: 2026

The following breakdown reflects realistic all-in costs for a 6-year programme (54-month course + 12-month internship). Families should budget for the upper range of each category to avoid mid-course financial stress.

Honest Assessment: Is Georgia the Right Choice for Your Child?

Georgia is a financially accessible, NMC-compliant destination with a large Indian student community and a credible FMGE track record. It is not, however, a shortcut. The 35.65% first-attempt FMGE pass rate means that without structured NEXT Exam Step 1 and Step 2 preparation running parallel to the MD curriculum, the probability of a delayed return to Indian medical practice is significant.

Georgia Is Well-Suited If:

  • Total family budget is under Rs 55 to 60 lakhs (all-in over 6 years)
  • The student is self-disciplined enough to pursue parallel FMGE/NEXT and USMLE preparation alongside the regular curriculum
  • The family has verified their chosen university's current NMC Gazette status independently
  • The student is comfortable with English-medium instruction in a non-European environment

!
Consider Alternatives If:

  • Budget allows Rs 70 to 100 lakhs - European destinations (Poland: 57% FMGE, Hungary: NMC approved with higher pass rates) offer statistically better licensing outcomes at higher cost
  • The student has not cleared NEET - no legitimate foreign medical university can lawfully enrol them under NMC Gazette 2021
  • The family has received offers from any agent or university offering "guaranteed FMGE clearance" - this is not a legally or academically possible commitment

Student Life in Georgia

What Does Daily Life Actually Look Like for Indian MBBS Students in Georgia?

This is the section most consultancies skip because they have never actually lived in Georgia. We own hostels there. Our team lives there. Here is what your child's daily life looks like - honestly.

AV Global managed hostel for Indian MBBS students in Tbilisi Georgia with Indian mess food
AV Global hostels in Tbilisi - Indian food, Wi-Fi, security, and a coordinator on site
Tbilisi Georgia cityscape safe environment for Indian MBBS students
Tbilisi - one of the safest cities for Indian students studying MBBS in Georgia

Weather and Climate

Tbilisi summers (June to August) are warm at 30 to 35 degrees - feels like North India. Winters (December to February) drop to minus 2 to plus 5 degrees. Your child needs a proper winter jacket, thermals, and warm shoes. The first winter is the hardest. By the second year, everyone adjusts. Batumi on the Black Sea coast is milder but gets more rain.

Indian Food

AV Global hostels serve daily Indian mess food - dal, rice, roti, sabzi, rajma, chole, both veg and non-veg. Tbilisi has Indian restaurants near university areas. Indian grocery stores sell rice, dal, spices, atta, and pickles. Your child will not go hungry for home food - we made sure of that.

Hostel and Accommodation

AV Global owns and manages student hostels near partner universities in Tbilisi. Dedicated Indian student hostels with Indian mess, Wi-Fi, 24/7 security, laundry, and an AV Global coordinator living on site. Monthly cost including food: Rs 12,500 to Rs 25,000 depending on room type. Students live with other Indian MBBS students, making the first months much easier.

Safety

Georgia ranks among the safest countries in the region. Tbilisi has low street crime, well-lit streets, visible police. Indian girl students tell us they feel safer walking in Tbilisi at night than in many Indian cities. Our team is available 24/7 for any emergency.

Getting Around

Tbilisi has a clean metro (2 lines), buses, and Bolt (like Uber). University is 10 to 20 minutes from the hostel. Most students walk or take the metro. Monthly transport: Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000.

Homesickness

Every student feels homesick in the first 2 to 3 months. What helps most is having other Indian students around - in the hostel, in class, in the mess. This is why we insist on managed hostels with Indian food and community. By the end of the first semester, most students say Georgia feels like a second home.

Frequently Asked Questions: MBBS in Georgia for Indian Students

Is the MBBS degree from Georgia valid in India?

Yes - provided the university is listed in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools, is NMC-approved at the time of your enrolment, and you complete the 12-month mandatory internship as required. You must then clear the Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) - or, once implemented, the NEXT Exam Step 1 and Step 2 - to obtain an Indian medical licence.

What is the total duration of MBBS in Georgia?

The MD programme has a 54-month course duration for pre-clinical and clinical academic training, followed by a compulsory 12-month mandatory internship, for a total of 6 years. This satisfies the NMC-mandated minimum programme length under the NMC Gazette 2021 guidelines.

Is NEET mandatory for MBBS in Georgia?

Yes. Under the NMC Gazette 2021 guidelines, NEET qualification is a legal prerequisite for any Indian national seeking admission to a foreign medical institution. No university - regardless of country - can offer a lawful enrolment pathway to Indian students who have not qualified NEET.

What is the FMGE pass rate for Georgia?

In the 2024 FMGE cycle, 4,221 students from Georgia appeared and 35.65% cleared the examination on that attempt. This is the largest single-country cohort in FMGE data, making it the most statistically reliable pass rate available for any foreign MBBS destination.

Can Georgia MBBS graduates apply for USMLE?

Yes. Graduates from Georgian universities listed in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools are eligible for ECFMG certification, which is a prerequisite for USMLE preparation and examination. The ECTS credit system used by Georgian medical universities is compatible with ECFMG's transcript verification requirements.

What language are classes taught in?

All programmes listed in this guide offer dedicated English-medium instruction for international students. Note that from the third year onward, clinical rotations involve interaction with Georgian-speaking patients. Basic Georgian language orientation (provided by most universities in Year 1) is therefore practically important, though the academic curriculum remains in English.

What is the weather like in Georgia for Indian students?

Tbilisi has mild winters (minus 2 to plus 5 degrees) and warm summers (30 to 35 degrees, like North India). Batumi on the coast is milder but rainier. Students need a winter jacket and thermals for the first winter. By the second year, most are fully adjusted.

Is Indian food available for MBBS students in Georgia?

Yes. AV Global hostels serve daily Indian mess food — dal, rice, roti, sabzi, both veg and non-veg. Indian restaurants and grocery stores are available in Tbilisi. Your child will not go hungry for home food.

How safe is Georgia for Indian girl students?

Very safe. Georgia ranks among the safest countries in the Caucasus. Tbilisi has low crime, visible police, and welcoming environment. Indian girl students consistently tell us they feel safer in Tbilisi than in many Indian cities. AV Global hostels have CCTV, security, and 24/7 coordinator.

SD

Mr. Sunil Deshmukh

Parent of 3rd Year Student, Tbilisi State Medical University, Georgia

When my daughter scored 430 in NEET, I felt like the world had closed on her. We went to two consultancies in Pune before AV Global. The first one tried to push us toward a university I had never heard of. The second one could not answer a single question about NMC compliance. Vijay sir sat with us for almost two hours in the Nagpur office. He did not sell us anything. He opened his laptop, showed us the WDOMS listing, showed us the FMGE pass rate data, and explained exactly what Rs 42 Lakhs would cover over six years - down to the last rupee.

My daughter is now in her third year at TSMU. She calls us every Sunday. She eats Indian food in the AV Global hostel. She has friends from Maharashtra, Gujarat, and UP. Last month she told me her anatomy professor said she was one of the strongest students in her batch. That one sentence made every sleepless night worth it.

AK

Ananya Kulkarni

4th Year MBBS Student, Georgian National University SEU, Georgia

I am going to be very honest because I think parents reading this deserve honesty. The first three months in Tbilisi were hard. I missed my mother's cooking. I missed my room. I missed speaking Marathi with my friends. There were days when I sat in my hostel room and wondered if I had made a mistake.

Then something shifted. My batchmates became my family. The AV Global hostel started feeling like home - the dal chawal in the mess is not my mother's, but it is close enough. The anatomy lab at SEU is better equipped than anything I would have gotten at a private college in India for three times the cost. I am now preparing for NExT alongside my regular coursework, and my professors actually help with that. I would not trade this experience for anything. But I will not lie and say it was easy from day one. It was not. It was worth it, though.

KS

Mrs. Kavita Sharma

Parent of 2nd Year Student, New Vision University, Georgia

I am a single mother. I work as a school teacher in Nagpur. When my son told me he wanted to study MBBS, I did not know how I would afford it. A private college in India was completely out of the question - they were asking Rs 90 Lakhs plus donation. I had maybe Rs 25 Lakhs if I took a loan and used all my savings.

AV Global did not just find a university that fit my budget. They sat with me and worked out a year-by-year payment plan. They told me exactly when each payment would be due, how much I would need in which month, and what the hostel and food would cost separately. No one had ever done that for me before. Every other consultancy gave me a glossy brochure. AV Global gave me a spreadsheet.

My son is now in his second year at New Vision University in Tbilisi. His total cost so far is exactly what they told me it would be. Not one rupee more. That is why I trust them - because they did not promise me the moon. They promised me the truth, and they delivered it.

RP

Dr. Rohan Patil

MBBS Graduate, East European University, Georgia - Now Practicing in Pune

I graduated from EEU in 2024 and cleared FMGE in my first attempt. I am now doing my internship in Pune and I have already received offers from two hospitals. Let me tell you what made the difference - it was not the university alone. It was starting NExT preparation from my third year, using the coaching support AV Global provides.

Most consultancies disappear after your flight takes off. AV Global's team in Tbilisi was in my WhatsApp group for six years. When I had a problem with my university registration in Year 2, their Georgia coordinator walked into the university office and sorted it out in one day. When I needed guidance on which NExT coaching material to use, their counsellor in India connected me with seniors who had already cleared it.

To any student reading this - Georgia is not a shortcut. The curriculum is demanding. The winters are cold. But if you work hard and you have the right support system behind you, you will come back as a doctor. I am proof of that.

My biggest fear was not the fees or the degree validity. My biggest fear was safety. I have a daughter. She was 18 when she left for Tbilisi. Every night for the first month, I could not sleep until she sent me a goodnight message.

I have to give credit to AV Global for understanding that fear without me having to explain it. Their coordinator in Tbilisi picked her up from the airport. He took her to the hostel, helped her set up her room, got her a local SIM card, and gave her his personal phone number. The hostel has CCTV, a security guard, and other Indian girls living on the same floor.

Within two weeks, my daughter was walking to university with her friends, eating at an Indian restaurant near campus, and laughing on video calls. She told me Tbilisi feels safer than the area near her college would have been in India. That one sentence finally let me sleep. I tell every parent I know - if you are scared about sending your child abroad, talk to AV Global first. They understand what a parent goes through.

If you have read this far, you are serious. Good.

When you call us, a senior counsellor who has personally sent hundreds of students to Georgia will sit with you for 30 to 45 minutes. We look at your child's NEET score, your budget, and your concerns. We tell you which 3 to 4 Georgian universities match your child. And we give you the exact total cost - tuition, hostel, food, visa, everything. No hidden numbers.

If Georgia is right, we move forward. If Russia or Kazakhstan fits better - we tell you honestly. We would rather lose a commission than send a student to the wrong university.
